Veep Blasts Tabloid Joy Fm

…Over Concocted Story

… Concerns Heighten Over Lowering Standards

Whilst the Editor of the New Punch newspaper, Ebenezer Ato Sam, a.k.a. Baby Ansabah, was busily purging his conscience over concocted stories against the current president, Joy FM, a popular radio station in reporting his story, ended up concocting their own story about the current vice President.

The usually genteel and media shy Vice President John Dramani Mahama, is said to be fuming with rage at Joy FM, for concocting such a terrible story about him.

The Joy FM story implied that Baby Ansabah, Editor of The New Punch newspaper was under pressure to make confessions about concocted stories he published against President John Evans Atta Mills, because he is acting under a spell of blackmail from a monetary payment he received from the Vice President.

Meanwhile, sources within Joy Fm’s newsroom have told The Enquirer that the initial storyline was that the government paid the editor to go on several radio stations with his confessions and again paid Metro TV to allow him to appear on their current affairs programme to repeat the allegations.

The Joy FM sources said, when they contacted the host of the Good Evening Ghana Programme, he debunked the story and stated that the decision to bring Mr. Ansabah on the TV programme was made by the producer of the show and that the allegation was too wild.

The Joy FM sources continued that when that leg of the story collapsed, another allegation surfaced immediately, which was that the Vice President had, as a condition for paying monies to Baby Ansabah, requested him to make certain confessions.

“Even that allegation too, was shot down by family members of the late pastor, who told us that they had not received any payment from Mr. Ansabah. In the absence of evidence that the Veep paid any money to Ansabah, there was no story. But my people went ahead and run the story against the Veep,” revealed the newsroom source.

Reacting to the Joy FM blackmail news story, the Office of the Vice President has described as “highly irresponsible another deliberate attempt to malign the Vice President, John Mahama, the Mills administration and the ruling NDC.”

The statement signed by John Abdulai Jinapor, Media Co-ordinator to the Vice President, said the JoyFM news report can, at best, be described as a “fabrication calculated to impugn the reputation of the Vice President.”

The statement said, Joy FM in its report claimed, among others, that it had been able to confirm that the Vice President assisted the said Baby Ansabah with money to pay compensation to the family of a pastor he allegedly knocked down in a motor accident. The statement says the report also falsely claimed that officials of the NDC used that assistance to blackmail Mr. Ansabah to avoid prosecution.

Mr. Janipor stated that neither has the Vice President given out any money to Mr. Ansabah nor has he coerced him to make any confession.

“Despite the clear denial by both a family representative of the deceased pastor and Mr. Ansabah that there has not been any such compensation paid, JoyFM claimed in its news report that it had gathered that as a fact and went ahead to broadcast the news item though it did not prove that so-called fact,” the Veep’s office stated.

The Office of the Vice President, in the statement said whilst the “Mills government believes in the freedom of the media and will continue to promote that, the media must desist from the deliberate peddling of falsehood and the fabrication of stories intended to malign personalities and institutions.”

The statement advised JoyFM, in particular, to remember the basics of journalism and endeavour to promote professionalism in the trade.

Meanwhile, there have been general concerns about falling standards at Joy FM, with others speculating that certain particular journalists at the station appear to have taken a negative political stance against the current government.

There are some media observers who also say the lowering of standards at the station could be attributable to the exit of key news anchors over the years.

These pundits say the station has not found fitting replacements for some of its key anchors, who include, Komla Durmor, Akwasi Sarpong, Sony Decker, Mawuko Zormelo, Stan Dogbe, and Paul Adom Otchere.

I ask, why wouldn't this man advocate for the building of a new/similar hospital in Tamale but wants the Kumasi one to be transferred there? Is he in a way saying that access to health service in Kumasi is the best in the country? This man should note that Ashanti is the most populous region in Ghana and should check at Ministry of Health website for the stats that shows that Ashanti has the least Health Facility/Health worker density. I wont be surprised to see this man being against a siting of a new international airport in Kumasi. In Ghana everything is either Accra or nowhere. Is it same in the US, UK, Switzerland, Australia etc?

Citing of military hospital in Kumasi comes under protest

A social justice advocate, Aglagskomah Asakey, has called on government to reverse the construction of a military Hospital in Kumasi to the Northern Region.

The former New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration started plans for the construction of a military hospital in Kumasi.

But Mr Asakey says it’s difficult to comprehend how such a decision could be taken when Komfo Anokye, Korle-Bu and 37 Military Hospitals serve the southern part of the country.

He argues that a military Hospital in Tamale could serve all three northern regions as well as Brong Ahafo.

Veep defends 1000% increment in road tolls By Citi 05 Feb 2010 | 06:08 PM
The Vice President, John Dramani Mahama has defended the recent increment in road tolls which is about a thousand percent.

The road tolls which was increased earlier this week triggered wild protests among many Commercial drivers across the country. Some drivers threatened to hit the streets and demonstrate against the increment. Some set bonfires on major roads causing severe traffic on those roads.

Others parked their cars while some arbitrarily inflated their fares to make up for the difference.

The tolls as explained by the Minister of road and transport, goes into the Road Fund which is used in rehabilitating the roads, constructing new ones and also for providing street lights.

The Vice President, John Mahama, however said that the toll increment would help Government construct more roads and maintain the bad ones.

Mr Mahama put up the defense when he inaugurated a 30-million dollar programme to rehabilitate all major roads in Tema and Ashaiman.

He however directed the roads and transport Minister, Joe Gidisu to ensure the Road Fund is monitored closely to prevent abuse.

Mr Gidisu said that the Vice President’s concerns are part of the NDC Government’s pledge to be open with expenditure.

“I think it is part of the transparency agenda of government and for that matter we are assuring Ghanaians of their value for money…which would not be done under the cloak of suspicion”.

He added that “the direction for the vice president is just in place, I even intend that by next week we should be able to relay to Ghanaians how much we have been able to accrue from the tolls…so the vice president’s intimation is in the right direction”

I don't get this. Our MPs are willing to take the government to court over the issue of ex-gratia butcould not take the ministry of education to task to provide pupils with classroom blocks to solve the problem of pupls learning under trees. Our MPs are selfish and self centered in their activities.Good help the future of Ghana.

Take home message is though individuals form football teams, no individual can be a team. This is best appreciated by the best footballer on earth now, Lionel Messi, who will NEVER create the impression that he is FC Barcelona and vice versa.
Leo is always crediting his team NOT himself. But in Ghana some people portray that Black Stars is no Black stars without Essien, Muntari,Appiah, Laryea etc. But with these players, the best we won on home soil was 2nd runner up and without them, we are the 1st runner up.

I hope the Kwadwo Asamoahs, Dede Ayews, Richard Kingstons will not receive the indispensable tag from today.

Peace to the world!

We beat Nigeria without Essien,Appiah,Muntari,John Mensah,John Paintsil etc. So they are dispensable afteral?
Well, I have always believed that there is no fellow human being who is indispensable in anything.

My suggestion to the constitution amendment/review committee.
Instead of ex-gratia and all others, the thieves (eg K4,JJ,Fiifi, Nkrumah, Busia etc) who rule Ghana in future should be given the option of being named after a state infrastructure developed by their governments like K4 presidential palace, JJ International conference center, Fiifi 10 billion dollar Korean house, etc. The infrastructure should be one initiated/executed to the end by that thief.
People may argue that that may discourage the continuation of projects started by your predecessor, but that can also be catered for constitutionally and by consensus. This will encourage them to not just initiate major projects but complete them on time before their terms end.

For your consideration constitutional review committee.

@kunka yes i dont pay ato for his blog so what is your problem now? tell me

extroshi 27 Jan 2010 | 09:06 AM
ato, i just love the way you assess the various political situations. i believe its time that politicians stop 'chopping' our monies and dedicate themselves to the development of our beloved country. Take a look at USA, if that was what Abraham Lincoln and the other presidents intended to do would they have gotten to where they are now? lets wake up for our nation. They can chop some but use most of it for development.

PRESS RELEASE
NO FREE LANDS IN GADANGME

In response to the Minister for Works and Housing (Hon. Albert Abongo) unfortunate statement on Citi FM morning show on 15th December 2009 regarding Government’s intention to give some Koreans “Free Land” in parts of the country (Not GaDangme Area).

We believe that if it is a Cabinet decision that would constitute a breach of trust and an affront/betrayal to GaDangmes and other Ghanaians who believed in the manifesto pledge to return our Lands to us but NOT to Koreans.

The sad part of his statement is that the houses which will be put up in Accra will be Executive Houses. What is the difference between this “Abongo Houses” and the Ghana@50 houses?

The Abongo Housing project is essentially a private venture by a private firm, Home Finance Company (HFC) and Not State Housing Corporation. Hence compulsorily acquired Lands cannot have the purpose of acquisition changed to benefit some Corrupt Individuals, Businessmen, Politicians and their Korean Cronies to the detriment of the real owners.

We want to point out to the Korean Government that what we need in Accra is REGENERATION of Social Housing and not executive Houses. The lands in question are for FARMING purposes and must be used to support the President’s State Farms and the Youth-in-Agric programmes not a potentially corrupt-laden housing scheme.
This we believe will be worse than the “Looting Brigade” we have experienced with past Governments. We have noted with Great Shock the arbitrariness in the earlier “return” of GaDangme Lands, which did not take into account the major stakeholders thus running into difficulties and therefore truncated the process amidst violence.
We are again surprised by government’s inability to correct the ungazetted re-naming of the Accra Sports Stadium. We have learnt with shock the expose by an Accra based radio station Joy FM, when the spokesperson for the Vice President said the WIFE had been allocated a state property in Accra for her personal NGO, which was not part of the government promises during the campaign and also we the electorate did not vote for and NOW this?

1. We thus call on Vice President John Mahama to give a full disclosure to the fine details as to
I. When this State property was allocated
II. How much was paid for it
III. Reason for allocation
We call on Vice President John Mahama to advice her wife to vacate the property immediately, go and rent her own office for the NGO, because we the GaDangmes are not going to benefit from her Parochial Interest.

We believe that our silence MUST NOT be misconstrued as consent.
We objected to the previous Government’s actions and we were hoping that this Government (NDC) would have done better as their slogan goes. We believe that we have given enough time and space for things to be done properly, BUT we have been compelled under these unfortunate circumstances to serve Notice of our abhorrence to this attitude of Government (NDC) in our affairs.
We demand an explanation for the double standards of the Government: And call on the President to rethink these Decisions before we strike. We are committed to fight, this time even harder than ever before until the proper thing is done.
All the same we wish to laud the Government for initiating policy of using the L1 as medium of instruction at the lower primary. Yet again, we wish to state that we shall abhor the use of any language but Ga and Dangme within GaDangme Region.
God bless Ghana, God bless GaDangme
For and on behalf of GaDangme Youth Association
Nii Marma Marquaye
Vice President
