| Our coal pot fire service |
| 15 Feb 2010 | 08:10 AM |
I really feel very sorry for Jerry John Rawlings. I never thought a day would come when I’d feel this way about the former dictator. But watching the ruins of the house he has lived in for the past 20 years fills me with a mixture of grief, anger and a wee bit of cynicism.
I grieve with Mr. Rawlings and his family because no human being should suffer what they have been through.
All their belongings, including important documents and historical mementos, are gone. All of Nana Konadu’s scarves and hairpieces are gone along with Kimathi’s birth certificates and Rawlings revolutionary photographs have all been burnt to ashes.
I am also very angry, once again, at the utter helplessness of our national fire service in such situations. The fire service headquarters is just a few minutes’ drive from the home of the Rawlingses. They got to the scene of the fire in good time (or so we hear), yet they were unable to put out the blaze. It seems to me that the fire went out only after it had devoured everything in its path. All the fire officers did was to nurse the blaze.
A proper fire service should be able to put out a domestic fire in a single-storey building with very little effort. Our fire service makes heavy weather of even the laziest infernos.
But is it their fault? Nope.
Sad to say but it’s the likes of Rawlings who have made the fire service the incompetent and inefficient service it is. When our leaders care so little about our collective security and spend our little money on their own luxuries and comfort, this is what we get.
And this is where cynicism kicks in.
There have been a lot of fires in the country in the past year. Our markets catch fire so often that it’s tempting to assume that the Greek god of fire has shrines in places like Makola, Kajetia and Asafo. Whenever there has a market fire, we are fed with silly effusions by our leaders who promise halfheartedly to do all in their power to equip the fire service and do all the common sense things that need to be done to prevent a recurrence. Yet the fires keep coming, exacting heavy losses and nothing gets done.
Recently, when the Foreign Ministry was completely burnt out, we were promised that something was going to done this time around to build a better-equipped fire service. After all the talk, we were told that we have to wait because the country is broke. But to our utter surprise, the government managed to scrape three million dollars for earthquake-ravaged Haiti. We just gave to Haiti to show the world that we are also here. Three million dollars could have started the process of equipping the fire service.
Now, the fire at the home of the Rawlingses, should knock some sense into the heads of our leaders that we can’t wait any longer. The fact is that we are all at risk. Even the most powerful can be afflicted by a fire. If the fire service cannot help a powerful man like Rawlings to salvage his property in a fire outbreak, what can they do for hapless people like me? It seems to me that they can only put out fires in coal pots. And that’s not good enough!
If we don’t take a cue from this fire to build for ourselves an efficient fire service, we will leave no doubt in the minds of the rest of humanity that we have just come together to form nothing better than a collective stupidity. And then who can tell me that Lord Lugard was wrong when he said that the thoughts of the African “are concentrated on the events and feelings of the moment and he suffers little from the apprehension for the future, or grief for the past.”
Now, we are all sad and grieving with the Rawlingses. But are we going to learn from the disaster that has befallen them? The cynic in me says we won’t. But I will gladly eat humble pie if someone proves me wrong – in, say, five years?

Honestly, I would have felt sorry if any human lives were affected!
As you rightly pointed out, leadership in this country has failed, over and over, to address basic issues that affects all of us.
The stupidity in all of this is that they never learn out of their lessons - here again you are right to reference Lord Lugard.
This time the chickens came back to roost right in the house of our ex-president.
Against this background, I don't have a reason to sympathize with this disaster.
I hope he was at least clever enough to secure an insurance against Fire.
What would annoy me most is when considerations pop up to erect a new mansion for him at the expense of the tax payer!!!

Well i hope something good is done to prevent future occurances. But what is the work of the fire service boss? Is he/she not suppose to go out there and look for funds for the work he does? is he/she suppose to look up to the government all the time? I know some guys like the former GIMPA boss who took his institution out of government subvention. Cant any thinking, creative boss do the same? I believe its high time some people suffer for these things.

Ato to be frank with you, there is no sense of security in ghana ( police, fire service, immigration, our health & social services etc). just like the NHIS that the minister of health says the international comminity (IC) will aid in implementing the single payment so will they be calling for help to make fire service better...but really those of us who have worked and studied in the westrn countries can say that what they (western countries) do is not exceptional if we stop talking non stop and being greedy but rather if we are realistic and work hard we can get there.
IF Mr.RAWLING & FAMILY HAD PUT THINGS IN PLACE WHEN THEY HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO SO (...thus when they were in power) they wouldn't have suffered this massive blow. really i don't feel for them because I know the state we replace if not all what they have lost....
i will only feel sad if it happens to a helpless citizen .....like the market women in asafo, kejetia, makola etc.

@ Wascarat according to his spokes man ( listening from joy fm)he was not at least clever enough to secure an insurance against Fire because he says its a state building
..........if the building is for the sate what about the content, is that also for the state?
a building aa new mansion for that matter will surely be erected for him at the expense of the tax payer.............

Ato, you don't understand why fire gutted JJ's house. It's no joke at all.
Mr Rawlings said that he has been praying to God sometimes for Prez Atta Mills but he does not know why GOD is not answering him and he has not been seeing any result from his prayers. So GOD proved to him that HE is the one who answers by fire. I sympathize with him any way but he should learn not to robe GOD into his politics of insults and baseless accusation. GOD cannot be mocked.
JJ, have my sympathy any way.

I can feel Rawlings saying the many fires under Mills have been masterminded by the NPP.
Many women killed under Rawlings' regime was masterminded by the Kukrudites according to Rawlings just as many robbery under Mills are being masterminded by Kukrudites according to Rawlings.By extension, the many fires are being masterminded by NPP-by Rawlings' logic.

Ato, things remain the same because people like you (and dare I say I?) who agonise daily about the misplaced priorities and shameful waste all around us know better than to go into the politics that provides the power and wherewithall is necessary to implement significant changes for the public good.
Sad as it seems, things are going to be like this for a long time to come because even among my contemporaries (I'm 30) who are politically active, you can tell by talking to them over a few beers that they possess the same mindset and traits of the current crop of political leaders; position exists to serve them and is only an avenue to amass wealth.
Sad indeed. What can we do to change the status quo Ato?

Hmmmmm Ato, soo bad but Rawlings had good19years to make our fire service a viable but he didn't Kufour built a mansion for Ghana good but if it catches fire we will loose everything in hours. I lost my house through fire last year and I was told the fire department when was contacted said their car is is not working Rawlings stays soo close to the national fire service head quarters for this damage to be done. Ato I hear when u call them they come to the place and tell u they are going to look for water and at other places they use the cars when they want to go and drink palm wine. In America fire department is one of the serious departments cos they know what they can loose through fire. What happens to all the nice houses and mansions in Ghana if the are on fire? Let's put our priorities right as a people.

I think you hit the nail right in the head, our leaders have failed us big time and needs to bow their heads in shame and start doing somthing about the resourcing of the fire service. JJ is the worst offender who ruled for about 19 years and yet did nothing about the ailing fire service.
JAK have also failed the country and so do Prof. mills also. The earlier he does that the better for me and you.
Ato, if the big man cannot be helped then what can they do for an ordinary citizen like me and you.
i also sympathised with the family but hope that NPP will not be blamed for the fire as they did when TOR's loading point caught fire.
Our leaders should be up and doing rather than promises. We all live to see.

Ato I cannot agree with you more. In as much as we grieve with the Rawlingses I believe this was a disaster waiting to happen. Information ministry, foreign ministry, TOR and now Rawlings' house not to mention fires at markets and houses of nobodies. I hope it spurs our moribund government and government agencies into action. We have already had a committee on this and I dont think there is the need for another one. The silver lining is that Rawlings might shout at the top of his voice now that it has affected him. BTW how can one contribute as a guest blogger to your site.

Ato,
This fire pales in comparison to what Mr Rawlings did to Alhaji`s Airport hotel, that wasnt a fire but he lost everything. The many watchmen and security services that were ordered in to break that building down were not there to help Mr Rawlings rescue any of this stuff! Madam Sarkodie Addo burnt at the hands of the so called revolution in the 1980`s in a fire that was made out at a military range.
At the hight of the burning of the Ministry of foreign affairs building NDC stalwarts were all over the airwaves awash with new conspiracy theories that will make Tom Clancy look like a kid a summer school!
Again the president was there (in what looks like a prop dress for the movie Crouching Tiger hidden dragon),no surprise there, he needed to be there to console his boss. But once again JEAM dosent disappoint another Committee!
Am going to be real ma cob and say am glad the fire caught Mr Rawlings house, his loss will hopefully be a wake up call for the sleeping Mills. Last week VRA,ECG and GRIDCO told us they need money and fast, power fluctuations have already started. The millions of Ghanaians whom have lost electrical and household appliances are too many to mention here.
Again were are told there is no fire policy on the building because as state offices, they insured by SIC. Anyone correct me if am wrong but the act the separated life and general insurance in this country also made provisions for state organisations to secure their own insurance separate from what SIC was providing right?
Mills should and could have turn this fire into a blessing,in a speech(if contracted I can write)proclaim a new way an end to the old ways and fire that will burn the bad ways of the past. Disbanding the fire service and creating it all over the country as departments under the various M/DCE.
This fire was good! Its a fire we can come around and burn the ills of the past and clean the wounds Rawlings scared, kill the germs of our evil thoughts and sooth the hearts of those whom still burn from the flames of the so called revolution. At this fire we can/should forge a new crucible, an anvil point with Mills the blacksmith, sweating and forging a new Ghana free from the aches of the past and convinced about the new world, ready to take part with our new amour made from the rubble of Mr Rawlings!
I agree we lost alot, but hopefully Mr Rawlings can do us all a favour and put his thought about the sad, sadistic rule he put us through all those years. I have heard him quote Kiplin and Fanz Fanon. If they could write so can he.
What you can/should write will be a sad blot on the minds of this nation but we will have a book, a sad one that will stand any fire.
Am happy your house got burnt Mr Rawlings!

To all those who sympathise with Jerry and yet wish no accusing fingers are pointed, you are wrong. NPP may not be link to this fire but ECG, GRIDCO & VRA will be at the recieving end, because its part of the Ghanaian culture and mentality to start point accusing and fault finding thereby laying the blame at someones door step. I pity the PRO of our power suppliers because this week they have a lot of work to do. Maybe they can eploy Malik or Baby Ansabah for this week. God bless Ghana

Sad that this might be Ato i have consistently said that Ghana, as a country, its population and its leaders are a country of talkertives. We talk and talk and talk but no actions. From the morning show on joy fm to makola market. Ato 5 to 10years from now we will be here talking about this same thing. How many times have these markets been raised down?? I cant count. Can u?? A couple of years ago i believe just before the elections one of these markets was raised down by fire and at the time candidate Mills and Akuffo Addo cashed in. They went to see the people and promised all sorts. Today here we are talking about fire, health and safety and the fire service. I can't describe what i am feeling now. Don;t know if its annoyance, sadness, sorrow or even sympathy not for Prez. Rawlings and his family but for the entire country. We are a country with misplaced priorities. When a mine in "Dompoase" collapsed, trapped and killed men and women, i did not hear gov't give any money to anyone neither did i hear gov;t offer any support whatsoever, then what do we hear, we give 3million what???? to who?? Are we mad?? Who advised gov't to give that amount. In any case who said the monies being donated goes to Haiti in cash?? It goes in food and other materials. So gov;t could not spend that money in the country by buying food and relief aid for example mattresses etc. from local producers to stimulate economic growth. I feel so sad for this country honestly. Why is it that when some disaster hits the poor person in makola or asafo no one (i.e gov;t) cares till it happens to some so called big man. What nonsense!!!! It is a painful loss indeed but is it more pain than the poor man or woman at makola, who has gone for a bank loan with neck breaking interest trying to make ends meet. Yes Prez. Rawlings would have lost valuables but the state, the people of Ghana and even Prez. Kufour, Akuffo Addo, Ohene Ntow etc. have their backs but what makes of the market woman at asafo market, the school child who does not know where his or her next meal is going to come from, the family who's parents have being killed in the "dompoase" mines, the youth who do not know their fate after SSS or is it SHS. Lets stop the talk and start walking for we are just a bunch of talkertives and jokers.

Where are the priorities |
| |
|
| |
If it's not the fire service, it's the hospitals. If it's not the hospitals it's the police service. If it's not the police service it's the schools, or the roads, or the telecom networks, or the electric power supply.
Somehow I am not convinced by the argument that the reason our services are so inefficient is because the money is not there. I think it's sad that this government and the last focus on new initiatives like a health insurance scheme and a school feeding program when the already existing government services are not working the way they need to.
Why? So students will go to schools where they don't have chairs to sit on or teachers to teach them, but at least they will be able to eat?
I realise that announcing new iniatives helps create headlines and makes politicians look like they are doing something, but I for one will not be impressed until they start making the existing organisations work.

Nana Essiful and Ato,
I'm in total agreement with you. Sadly, I didn't hear about our govt giving $3,000,000 to Haiti. What??????????? I don't have a problem with donating something substantial but $3,000,000?? I was in Ghana this past Christmas, and I saw how many Ghanaians are suffering and then we gave $3,000,000 to Haiti??
You know, we certainly have misplaced priorities, for example, I can't understand the sense in giving huge sums of money to our footballers when they win international games etc. I say it's ok to recognize them and let them know they've made us proud, but why spend so much money on folks who are already being paid large sums of money and who are supposed to be patriotic enough to want to play for Ghana. When sportsmen in the U.S. excel, they get a chance to go to the White House, get sponsorships, do adverts etc....the U.S. government doesn't give them huge sums of money in addition to the money they're already making. And, we're talking about the U.S. here. Why would we, a 3rd world country dish out such huge sums of money?? We seriously need to take another look at these things. It is totally absurd that we have fire service personnel who're getting paid to do absolutely nothing, they can't salvage property and they can't save lives. It's truly sad.

Ato, the least said about the ineffectiveness of our fire brigade the better. This is not the first and I want to be proven wrongly that this will be the last. I will have to have time to check the distance from the headquarters of the GFS to the JJR's house. But clearly it is longer that the distance from the Makola market to the fire service office located right adjacent to the Market. But several fires have gutted the market and the GFS has not been able to salvage anything from the ravaging fires.
Ato, I have single handedly overpowered a fire started in my engine when my fire estinguisher failed to work. So GFS cannot give us any further excuses. Maintaining a fire service in Ghana is a serious financial loss to the nation.
There must be a substitute to the FS. Lets scrap it and rather form voluntary community fire watchdogs. Lets also educate people on TV and radio about common sense approaches of avoiding such infernos and what to do when it happens. The GFS cannot even kill a coal pot fire, as you want to give them that credit.

even though i'm sad about the loss I'M SOMEHOW OKAY THAT THE FIRE OCCURED!!! hopefully it would mark the end of Rawlings occupying a govt bungalow!!!
Rawlings should have moved out of govt property long ago since he has his own property!!!
WE SHOULD ALL STAND AGAINST ANY MOVE BY GOVT TO PROVIDE HIM ANY OTHER HOUSE FOR ACCOMMODATION.
AND WE SHOULD ENTERTAIN ANY NONSENSE THAT MAKES THIS OCCASION A JUSTIFICATION FOR THE FOOLISH AND VERY VULGAR DEMANDS KUFUOR MAKES ON US UNDER THE THIEVING GUISE OF EX-GRATIA!!!
but truth be told, Rawlings is not one of those you can accuse of building a presidential palace while our Fire Service was in shambles. he is not one you can accuse of drinking tea while our Fire Service was in shambles. he did his bit!!! at least he did something for the Ghana Armed Forces!!! and Kufuor too could have done something for Ghana police so that perhaps Mills would tackle the Fire Service!!!

Massa, even if the Castle or the Jubilee House burns down nothing will be done. We behave like the proverbial Kokosakyi. We shout "okyena mesi me dan" as soon as the clouds gather. In civilized societies, disasters serve as wake up calls to put things in place. Unfotunately it seems our "leaders" have no idea what should be done.
Parliament has to call the ministry of interior to tell the whole nation what they are doing to equip th fire service and this should be done with timelines. We do not want to hear the usual crap- plans are far advanced. Parliament should also sit up and start enacting laws that will make it mandatory to have smoke detectors, sprinklers, extinquishers etc.in houses and buildings

This is not perculiar to Africans. It applies to all poor people and nations around the world. It has nothing to do with Africans identity.

Ato you got it wrong! The building is a wooden structure. I have not seen it but from the pics it appears the floors are also wooden. The mistake is the precaution not taken when one lives in such a house. The timbers are dry from the time of the colonial days and therefore very prone to easy combustion. We should not blame the fire service wholly because fires in such buildings spread very fast once high temperatures are reached. What we should learn is to undertake an audit of all such colonial buildings and fit them immediately with smoke detectors because I am sure the occupants got to know of the fire very late so when the firemen came it was burning severely.

Ato, I always laugh when I remember what one of the fire service personnels told the media that day. He said it took them JUST THREE HOURS to put the fire out. May be, with the equipment they have, they thought three hours was too short. I think Pres Mills will resource the FS now that Rawlings has fallen victim to the infficiency of the FS. for all we know, jj packed his stuff out from the house and deliberately set the empty structure on fire. he enjoys being in the news and would do anything to get our attention. am not convienced that he lost anything.

I keep repeating this after every fire but its the first common sense thing to do"fire hydrants". the country needs fire hydrants on every block in the city. Without them, no expensive machinery can put out a fire.

Ato, I could not cast my vote b/cos my selection is not listed. My selection is NEVER!!!!.I am not normally this negative, but so many things in Gh just make me sooooo sick...Did you hear Kofi Adams claim that they have always reported the fire threats and problems to govt and nothing got done about it. SO they CONTINUED TO LIVE IN THE HOUSE KNOWING THE DANGERS THEY FACED and now we are all supposed to be sympathetic.....And yet they had money to throw parties at which who born dog speeches are made...

I do not like Rawlings, and certainly not all us must like him.But one thing is clear, Rawlings might allegedly kill, destroy or confisticated properties; but this is a calamity and you Abena you are not immunned! I could be your house the next time.

The same article which appeared on myjoyonline website has a picture. Looking closely at the picture of Rawling's house with the fire buring below the house, revealed something interesting. there in the fire was an image of Acheampong and Akuffo. Look at the picture and tell me I am a liar.

what a mess. i feel sorry for the rawlingses. however, if our leaders had governed in a much more efficient manner in the past, jj's house would have been saved. what a shame, GHANA. Dr. Nkrumah is rolling in his grave right now.

Ato, if I say I am glad this happended to Rawlings and his family that will be the joke of the centuary. I am exceedingly excited it happended. When Mr. Quashigah left our mothers, wives and sisters to climp steps at Korle-Bu with our sons, daughters, sisters and brothers hanging between their legs to go seek medical care in Israel and came back in a box, I simply said good riddance. When Ex-Presidents, Ex-Ministers and MPs quote portions of the constitution to justify their greed and opporlence but conviniently forget to quote the same constitutions which says their constituents SHALL have access to health care and education at reasonable cost, I just pray that their TIME GO COMe just like the Rawlings, the Quarshigahs, the whats that Finance Minister's name?

i was the 97th person to vote regarding your 'efficient fire service' poll. the problem I have is that after i had voted 96% of the respondents felt that it will take 50 years to get an efficient fire service in Ghana. what a pity!
what this tells me is that majority of Ghanaians don't believe in a better life. Why do they think it has to take 50 years? that is too long. If a leader looks at such a results all he can see is that the people have low expectations!! the problem is the people don't even realise the sort of expectations they have.
A lot of people claim that they want a better life yet do NOTHING to improve their lives and those of other Ghanaians. We have to go on demonstrations to show how disgusted we are about certain things. We must put pressure on our MPs who always go to parliament fighting for $50,000 loans to buy cars!!!
There are people with Phds in Ghana yet the way they talk even tells you that only a few of them have really arrived. People seem to think that you have to be educated abroad before you become sensible.
in fact there are a lot more that I could go on to write but for lack of time,etc...I have to end it.
MY MESSAGE IS WE SHD HAVE HIGH EXPECTATIONS AND WE WILL SEE THINGS CHANGING OTHERWISE OUR LEADERS WILL TAKE US FOR GRANTED AND DO NOTHING. WE MUST ALSO WORK HARD FOR OURSELVES AND OUR NATION AND STOP THINKING ABOUT FUNERALS AND 'GBONYO PARTIES'. WHATEVER A MAN SOWETH SO SHALL HE REAP. IF OUR FIRE SERVICE IS INEFFICIENT WE ARE ALL TO BLAME. DON'T THINK U R BLAMELESS OTHERWISE U WON'T DO ANY POSITIVE THING ABOUT IT. THEY SAY THAT 'a word to the wise is enough(or is it in the north?)

Sorry to those of u with high expectations. My 6th line should have read as follows:''If a leader looks at such a result, all he can see......expectations!!''

We could have established a public donation fund so that the public does the donation. however, just because it was suggested by somebody from the opposition, that idea was scrapped.

I love Shawshank Redemption. After I first saw it, I marvelled at human ingenuity and talent. What dowe do here, talking about things burnt having any national value! Which of the Prez see/saw the need for a National Art Gallery or Museum, how many of our children have been in a museum in Gh? What happened to the writings of freedom fighters found at the former international hostel, they were burnt with even no fanfare. Go to Fort Prinzestein in Keta, ledger books from the slave trading era, at the mercy of the sea salt? We are a sad lot and all we care about is calling every person brother and sister, daddy and mummy. So commiserate but people should stop talking about people's personal effects being national assets.
