BOOK REVIEW: Farida Badwei on ‘Pretending to be President’

With his trademark wit and candour, Ato Kwamina Dadzie brings us a series of letters which reflect the musings of ‘The Excellent One’ – President J.A. Fukuor, president of Sikaman.

President Fukuor, having just won his second and final term in office, is smug ,feels somewhat invincible and just wants to be left alone to enjoy the perks of being the highest paid civil servant in Sikaman. But things are just not going according to plan. He keeps running his mouth, which gets him in trouble with the press and the people of Sikaman.

His party members, suddenly, develop inconvenient consciences and thus start behaving as though they’ve been injected with the Truth Serum, revealing uncomfortable truths about the goings on in the party; and his ministers just won’t adhere to their job description, thus forcing him to create committees to do what the ministries are supposed to be doing.

His predecessor, Jerry Boom, is also hovering somewhere in the background, occasionally coming out with statements which throw the whole nation into a frenzy.

To make matters worse, Sikaman is plunged into one of the worst energy crisis in its history as it prepares to celebrate its 50th year of independence. With all these, and many more problems crashing down on him, what is a man to do?

Travel.

So President Fukuor travels and travels and travels, all under the pretext of looking for investors. Although some of the destinations are questionable, The Excellent One remains adamant that the journeys are for investment purposes.

Aptly named “Pretending to be president”, the book reveals the frustrations and vulnerabilities of a man who just wants to get through his final term with the minimum of fuss. He’s not seeking re-election so doesn’t really have to please the people to canvass their votes. He just wants to go through the motions, pretending to be president till his term is up.

The author, being an unapologetic cynic, paints the President as a narcissistic politician who cares for the welfare of numero uno and is just out to enjoy as much as he can before his term runs out.
However, if you look closely you also find a man, who to an extent, tries to do the right thing but is hampered by the dictates of those who helped him up the ladder, for they’re the same people he’ll meet when he climbs down once his term is up.

Like an expensive bottle of brandy, ‘Pretending to be President’ should be read in ‘sips’ i.e. read a little, put it down, reminisce and laugh or get angry(depending on your political affiliations). If you read all at once, you are likely to choke on it and not appreciate its flavours.

‘Pretending to be President’ is a must read for the political-minded folks.

*Farida is an Software Architect (that is to say she builds software) with Rancard Limited. I wrote quite a number of the pieces in ‘Pretending from President’ a few steps from her – without her knowing.

Congratulations on the book though you totally lost me on the 'disciple of Nkrumah' proclamation. Eeesh! It amazes me how Ghanaians become desperate to emulate and glorify mediocrity just so that we can go through the motions of celebrating independence heroes.

I am sure there are valid and credible reasons for admiring Nkrumah but in the end he turned out to be the same garden variety despot and megalomaniac as his contemporaries i.e. Mobutu, Bokassa, Banda, Kenyatta and of course Mugabe who unfortunately for us still lives on.

And you feign surprise that Ghana's political legacy has been one of mediocrity, mendacity, corruption and tyranny.....all fertile seeds sown by the 'Father of our Nation.' To be blunt, George Washington he was not.

As for your criticims of Mills, I have a few comments to share. For one, let me state for the record that I am very sympathetic to the NPP consequently was TREMENDOUSLY dissapointed by the election of Mills but I am supportive of GHANA and thus respect the sitting head of state and his endeavors. I wish the man well and God speed.

So for someone who would never vote for Mills I find the souring of the country on his performance very disingenious and hypocritical.
1) Are people expecting manna from heaven? It is totally reasonable and justified for people to expect measurable results within certain timeframes but this pervasive belief by Ghanaians that GOVERNMENT SHOULD SOLVE THEIR PROBLEMS or better yet SAVE THEM FROM THEMSELVES is ridiculous and after a while, frankly sickening. How about collective and individual responsibility? How about personal choices and priorities? Certainly government is responsible for providing certain social services and overall safeguarding the means of achieving personal wellbeing but it is not government's job to guarantee citizens' personal well being. That is the job of the CITIZEN and determined by personal choices made by him and her.
2) One of the reasons I could never support NDC was due to their populist drivel and pie in the sky electioneering. So now that common sense and reality have set in like no you cannot guarantee that each and every Ghanaian will be healthy, happy and successful.....and guess what, it will take generations of Ghananians exerting themselves and making the right political, social and economic choices for yourselves before you see a dramatic change in your lifestyles....so put your noses to the grindstone and don't put hope in false political messiahs.
3) NPP was beaten fair and square and deservedly so, and if the reasons they were booted out then (corruption, incompetence, kleptocracy and arrogance) were still valid then as they are now, then Ghanaians should be even more vigilant about politicians promising a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and rely instead on their own collective grit, industry and perseverance. Meaning results will take time.

No other society has experienced miracles overnight, I agree completely with Mills assessment that the opportunity to express collective judgement on his administration will avail itself in 4 years. Until then what has the average Ghanaian done on his own to realize his dreams and destiny? That should be all our pre-occupation.

@ Ato my little cocroach brain tells me PRETENDING to or IMMITATING another amount to DECIET and IMPERSONATION which is A TORTIOUS ACT. I hope you're assembling your team of lawyers as lawsuits are likely to come your way soon. God bless Ghana
  Ato's Response
What is a "tortious act". Please, if you don't have anything to say don't force it. God Bless Ghana.

Ato I'd recommend the book to the appropriate quarters for it to be used as a set book for Literature in English in the SSS (sorry SHS) so that you can make more money from it, after all we have all been using our talents (or maybe smartness) to chop noko fio from "the Ghanaian People". I wish the best on this ur new path.
